Tips for Chronic Sinusitis Treatment

July 4th, 2010

Sinusitis means inflammation of a sinus. Most of the problem of sinusitis is caused by an infection. The most commonly affected part is cheekbone sinuses. Chronic sinusitis is a swelling of the air-filled spaces behind the forehead, cheeks, and eyes, which continues for a long time or goes on for many days. Chronic Sinusitis means that a sinusitis becomes persistent more than 12 weeks. Chronic sinusitis is mostly common than acute sinusitis. Acute sinusitis often occurs with upper respiratory infections or swelling. Chronic sinusitis may produce little bit less severe symptoms than acute sinusitis, but it can damage the tissues of the sinuses. The most common symptom is usually a blocked nose which means nasal obstruction.

Symptoms that sometimes occur include: nasal stuffiness, nasal discharge, postnasal drip, facial fullness, discomfort, chronic unproductive cough, hyposmia, visual disturbances, sneezing, stuffy ears, unpleasant taste etc. In children, symptoms may include irritability, snoring, mouth breathing, feeding difficulty, and ‘nasal’ speech. If you go somewhere for check up, the health care provider will examine your body as well as tap lightly on your face over your sinuses. If you want to know more about the sinuses, the sinuses glow when light shines directly onto them. If sinusitis is present, the sinuses will not glow when your doctor shines a light onto them.

You can cover some tests which include:

•             CT Scan of the sinuses

•             MRI of the sinuses

•             Sinus x-Ray

Sometimes what happen is that some people are troubled by frequent sinus infections, or continuous infection, which goes on. Chronic sinusitis treatment continues for a longer period means for weeks or even months at a time. This can sometimes lead to serious complications, including infections in the bones and tissue near the sinuses. It’s  very rare that this infection can spread to the brain. That person will be very ill and have swelling around the eyes.

In the chronic sinusitis treatment, we can treat it  medically. It all depends on how severe your condition is. After that, it depends on your doctor whether to prescribe oral antibiotics, antibiotics that are inhaled through your nose, or antibiotics that are injected directly into your bloodstream. If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotics may be given. Antibiotic treatment usually takes 3 – 4 weeks. If you take the pills, it is taken by mouth that helps relieve oral decongestants. Nasal sprays may help relieve symptoms of chronic sinusitis treatment that are due to allergies.
