The Stone Clinic Debuts Blog Dedicated to Meniscus Transplantation for Arthritis Sufferers

July 13th, 2010

San Francisco, Calif. — June 9, 2010 – Statistics reveal that 61 of every 100,000 people suffer from acute meniscus tear and 60 percent of people above the age of 65 suffer from degenerative meniscus tear, making it one of the most common knee injuries in the world. The Stone Clinic, founded by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Stone, has launched a blog dedicated to educating consumers about meniscus transplantation for arthritis – a very effective technique to lessen the pain and inconvenience of meniscus tears in arthritis sufferers.

In the United States alone, 850,000 meniscus tear surgeries, where a portion of the meniscus is removed, are performed every year. Loss of the meniscus leads to arthritis. With the aging of the United States population and the subsequent increase in arthritis patients, meniscus replacement (transplantation) for arthritis sufferers will be on the increase. The Stone Clinic is dedicated to returning patients to their normal activities faster, fitter and stronger than they were before injury. Part of that dedication includes continuous research and innovation into meniscus transplantation for arthritis in joints.

Meniscus replacement by meniscus allografting is a technically challenging procedure. In patients who have lost their meniscus, the fibrous cartilage is replaced with one from a donor. The Stone Research Foundation’s recent study of meniscus replacement in patients with arthritis has demonstrated that meniscal allograft transplantation can be used in higher-risk patients (patients with more severe arthritis) with reasonable expectations of a successful outcome. The Stone Clinic’s blog will present findings on meniscus transplantation, explain the role of stem cells in the surgery, and explain in laymen’s terms how patients can help determine if they are a candidate for meniscus transplant.

The Clinic’s blog will also address topics such as meniscectomy, meniscus repair, meniscus reconstruction using a collagen meniscus implant and complete meniscus replacement.

The Stone Clinic is a pioneer in biologic knee replacement and the implantation of artificial joints. Articular cartilage past grafting, meniscus transplantation, collagen meniscus implantation and ligament reconstruction techniques are just some of the procedures The Stone Clinic pioneers in its San Francisco location to help people remain active.
