Protein Drinks Potentially Bad for Health According to Consumers Report

July 4th, 2010

Northern Ireland, 16/06/2010 – You may or may not have heard about a new report from Consumers Report. A study has been done on protein drinks by consumers report on the effectiveness and dangers of them. The general findings concluded that we do not need protein drinks. There are cheaper alternatives. 3 out of 15 well known brands had high levels of arsenic, cadmium, or lead, exceeding limits advised by USP.

My team at Body Building Workouts has studied this consumers report to give an objective opinion on protein drinks from their findings.

The main problem a lot of us face is being caught in the middle of the reports and marketing campaigns. On one side we have supplement companies promoting their protein drinks. Making claims of increased muscle mass, leaner physics and better health. On the other side we have reports telling us that protein drinks are full of harmful metals and other compounds.

It is no secret that it is hard to trust a lot of the supplement companies claims. They are going to market their products in the best possible light to get people to buy their protein drinks. They have huge resources to market their products. Many people have been convinced that these supplements will provide them with results they can only dream of.

Does that mean we should listen to the consumers report and stay well clear of them? Lets find out.

The consumers report states that they found high levels of metals in 3 out of 15 popular brand protein drinks. They also claim that protein drinks are not necessary and cheaper alternatives can be used. Some fitness pros have questioned the reliability of the consumers report testing methods, claiming for more evidence on their claims. I do not want to delve into these claims to deeply as this can get boring and go on all day. The purpose here is to get an objective view on protein drinks.

Like with a lot of issues on information flying so quickly across the internet these days; it is important to use some common sense. We do not need to jump from one extreme to the other. Be it gobble down massive amounts of protein drinks for muscle mass. Or avoid them like the plague because they will kill you.

Protein can be useful for some people to get extra protein from protein drinks. They should not replace real food if were, but for convenience, they can be used. There will be no health issues from moderate consumption. The consumers reports make some good points about alternatives, which is fine, but do not write them of completely.
