Arizona Allergy Clinic Offers a Lasting Solution For Hives

Skin irritations are a part of life, but imagine a rash that stayed for 46 years. Ethyl Aungst developed allergies in 1964 which were accompanied by large, itchy welts commonly referred to as hives. The hives would come twice a month and last for three days. Over the course of nearly five decades, the recurrent, maddening itching became unbearable.

“I was at the point I didn’t want to live anymore,” said Aungst.

Hives, also referred to as urticaria, are usually a result of an allergic reaction. When the body detects an “enemy allergen” (such as pollen, pet dander or food items), it attempts to defend itself by release a chemical known as histamine into the blood vessels. The rush of histamine causes the blood vessels to stretch and leak fluid. As the fluid accumulates, it leads to swollen, itchy hives.

Fortunately for Aungst, there was an end to the misery. After years of unsuccessfully seeking treatment from dermatologists, she sought help from a Phoenix allergy doctor. Allergist. Dr. Stuart Agren, medical director of the Family Allergy Clinic in Mesa, Arizona, tested Aungst for allergies and determined sensitivities to various pollens. He then prepared an allergy serum containing extracts of the offending pollens mixed into a saline solution.

Allergy serum can be taken through shots or, less painfully, by dropper bottle under the tongue where it is absorbed into the bloodstream (known as sublingual immunotherapy). Aungst opted for the under-the-tongue treatment which, unlike shots, is safe enough to take in the comfort of home. She dropped the serum under her tongue daily, gradually working through vials of serum that contained increasing concentrations of pollens. After just several weeks on the serum, her body became desensitized to the pollens—it “made peace” with them and no longer overreacted when she encountered them in the environment. Her hives went away and have not returned since.

According to allergist Dr. Agren, slathering hives with topical creams is just a band-aid solution.

“Since hives virtually always have their root in allergy, the only lasting solution is to desensitize the body through allergy treatment,” said Dr. Agren.
